Insurance Exam Study Tips - Part 1
December 15, 2008
Here’s Part 1 of a short series on how to get ready to take your insurance license exam! Part 1 covers some basic tips on how to begin preparing for the exam. In later installments we’ll be giving you some valuable tips that will give you the edge when answering multiple choice and true/false and math questions.
It’s important to give yourself plenty of time to get ready to take the Insurance Exam. Be sure to schedule plenty of study sessions over many days or a few weeks. Obviously you’re not going to be able to learn everything the night before you sit for your Insurance Exam so get started as soon as possible!
Let’s go!
- Preparing for the Insurance Exam can create stress. If exercise isn’t part of your daily routine start now and take some time to exercise each day during the week before the exam. As little as 20 minutes of walking each day will reduce your stress level.
- Be sure you have a clear understanding regarding all important topics and ask your instructor about any topics you are having a hard time understanding.
- During your review process, be sure to remember any tips you received during the course.
- Ask your teacher to review all of the areas that he or she knows will be addressed during the Insurance License Exam.
- Take time to closely review all of your course notes, Insurance practice exams and any other study materials that are available to you.
- Take some time to review the night before the Insurance Exam but don’t pull an “all-nighterâ€. Be sure to get at least 6 hours of sleep the night before you take your Insurance License Exam.
- Eat a light meal before you sit for your Insurance Exam. Don’t eat anything too heavy because that could cause you to feel sleepy during your exam. You want to be alert and focused as possible at exam time.
Part 2 will focus on how to be ready on the day of your exam!

Tips for Answering Multiple Choice Insurance Exam Questions
We’d like to help you learn how to answer these sometimes confusing questions! Here are a few simple to remember tips and tricks that will help you during your insurance exam.
- Be certain that you clearly understand the question before you look at your answer choices
- Consider how you would answer the question even before you look at your answer choices
- Eliminate the answers you know are not correct
- Review each answer choice before you make your decision
- If you’re not sure how to answer the question, make an educated guess. Chances are good that you will make the right choice
- If you find that you are second guessing yourself, go with your first answer choice. In most cases your first choice is going to be the right choice
- When presented with “All of the above” or “None of the above” answers, if you are positive that one of the choices is true do not choose “None of the above” or if one of the choices is clearly false do not select”All of the above”
- In questions that include an “All of the above” choice, if you see that there are at least two correct statements, then “All of the above” is most likely going to be the right answer
- A positive answer is more likely to be true than a negative answer
- In questions that contain a “None of the above” choice, if you notice that there are at least two in-correct answers, then “None of the above” is most likely going to be the right answer
Next time we’ll be sharing some simple tips and tricks on how to answer True/False questions on your insurance exam!

Tips for Answering True/False Insurance Exam Questions
- In most cases there are more true answers than false on most insurance exams.
- If there is no penalty for guessing, go ahead and guess, you have a 50% chance of choosing the right answer.
- Read through each statement very carefully, and be sure that you pay close attention to the qualifiers and keywords that are used.
- Qualifiers such as ” always”, “never” and “every” indicate that the statement must be true no matter what. In most cases the use of these qualifiers lead to a false answer.
- Qualifiers like “usually”, “sometimes”, and “generally” mean that if the statement can be considered true or false depending on the circumstances. Normally the use of these qualifiers lead to an answer of true.
- If there is any part of the question that is false, then the entire statement must be considered false, but simply because part of a statement is true doesn’t always make the whole statement true.
Next time we’ll be sharing some simple tips and tricks on how to answer Math questions on your insurance exam!

Tips for Answering Math Questions on the Insurance License Exam.
- When you first look at a question, attempt to complete it on your own without looking at the answers that have been presented to you. Trying to work out the question on your own is the best way to LEARN THE STEPS necessary to complete these types of math questions.
- Work on the questions more than once. Do not work on them in the same order every time, and do not just memorize the answers. Again, it is most important that you LEARN THE STEPS necessary to complete the type of question you are working on.
- Make up a sheet with all the formulas you need to know and memorize all the formulas on the sheet.
- Learning THE STEPS will give you the opportunity to “Brain dump†and write down the STEPS on the piece of paper you are given at the test center to work out the various math formulas. Once you have them written down, you do not have to worry about remembering them any more. Be careful not to take up too much room on the paper because when you use up one piece you must turn it in to get another blank piece of paper.
- Read each question at least twice and each answer at least twice. Eliminate the two answers that you know are wrong, and pick the BEST answer from the remaining two. Remember there is only ONE BEST ANSWER to every question especially in math. Do not round off in your calculator until the end of the problem. For example, if you divide $1,000 by 360 days = $2.78, and if you leave that number in your calculator and multiply by 25 days =$69.44. If you take the $2.78 out of your calculator and multiply by 25 the answer will be $69.50.
- If math is a problem area for you, skip all of the math questions the first time around when taking the state insurance examination. This actually is the best way to approach all of the questions on the exam. If you’re not sure that the answer you have chosen to a particular question is correct, than just skip it. You will have an opportunity at the end of the test to go back, and re-think these questions.
- Many state insurance license exams consist of only 10% math questions. Do not spend all of your time worrying about math if it is not your strong suit. If you learn all of the other CONCEPTS and DEFINITIONS presented in your insurance license course, you can miss all of the math questions and still pass the state exam.
